Our kitchen and wet areas we are leaving at the current rough troweled surface with a penetrating sealer (rather than a film-forming sealer) So that we don’t have to add any non-slip additives. But plain concrete isn’t all that beautiful, so we’ve stained it!
we purchased 3 shades of acid stain: Aged Buff, Sandstone, and Rust. We played around with times and layers in a bedroom which will be carpeted. The Aged buff reacted really nicely with our concrete, the Sandstone came up in a nice range of colours, but was patchy with areas that didn’t take on much colour at all, and the Rust was totally unpredictable - sometimes even stripping off previous layers of stain. So we went all over in Sandstone and came along later with Aged Buff over all the lighter areas.
The acid immediately reacted when sprayed on, fizzing slightly and looking very green. It dried with an opaque whitish scum on the surface which we washed off to reveal the beautiful reddish browns and oranges we are left with.
