Picture frames and similar can be hung from hooks relying on the strength of the render, but cabinets and bookshelves require stronger anchor points, so before the first coat of render went on, we drove some pieces of framing pine (with one pointed end) into the bales in a row so we could attach on these skinny boards. these will be buried in the render, but when we attach cabinets and shelves to these boards (through the render), they will be supported by the strength of multiple pine pegs in the compressed wall.
We have kept electrical outlets and switches to a minimum in the straw bale walls, but in some places we definitely want them. The cables running through the straw bales are in conduit, and the outlets and switches are boxed out, so there are no electrical components in contact with the straw.
