Hand-Rearing Animals

We lost a doe a few days ago.

After that heartbreak there is real joy in the friendships being forged with these young kids.

The vet said the drench we were using was incorrectly labeled (she gave a rather angry vent about the brand) which meant I was under dosing the goats and they weren’t protected against worms/parasites. Two does got infected, one is recovering now, but poor Maggie went into ketosis which was quickly fatal.

Baby chicks are hatching now too.

one mother hen left her nest with her young ones yesterday before the last egg hatched. As we could hear peeping, we knew the chick wasn’t far off emerging, so we brought the egg inside and made it comfy in a basket above a hot water bottle. We played LEGO, read stories and coloured pictures all afternoon while keeping an eye on the gradually increasing crack in our little egg. The chick hatched safe and sound and was pooped under its mother after dark last night and is now indistinguishable from its siblings.
