A momentous day. The second coat of render has finally been completed (so long as we don’t count the groove we cut in the kitchen for some extra electrical conduit) This second coat was applied in more than one layer where there were deep hollows to fill, right up to four layers in the lowest spots. 11 cubic metres of sand and countless scoops of local clay soil later, we now have the straw bale walls shaped inside and out to our satisfaction.
We’ve done a bit of a clean up, bagged up the remaining loose straw to use as goat bedding, and packed up the kids toys and the playpen - we don’t want kids playing around the lime render for although it is non-toxic, it is very alkaline meaning it is caustic until it cures.
